Built between 1856 and 1859, Fort Albert was originally called Fort Touraille and boasted a grand total of 43 guns. It was the main military headquarters on the island until 1929 and formed part of the greater Fortifications of Alderney. Interestingly, the island is one of the most heavily fortified in the world considering its small size and the number of historic fortifications it houses. Given its strategic position in the English Channel, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.
