Since Ísafjörður was never visited by a major fire, there are many old houses from the 18th and 19th centuries in the old town. The current church of the city, however, is much younger. The church was consecrated in 1995 by the Bishop of Iceland instead of a previous building on Ascension Day. The adjacent cemetery is much older. His story probably goes back to the Middle Ages.
