The visitor center serves as a portal to the vast area, where visitors can then walk among the ruins of defensive installations and Åland's first city-like environment, Skarpans. Two hiking trails take visitors to the area's most interesting sights, including the burial grounds on Prästö, the main fortress, the defense towers and magnificent views of the area and the nearby archipelago.

In the visitor center, visitors will find stories about Bomarsund's history and inspiration to make their own discoveries among the ruins of the once mighty fortress. Here, films and objects are shown that together provide a picture of the dramatic events in the shadow of the Crimean War in 1854. But here they also tell about what it was like to live and reside in Åland during the 19th century, a time that brought many great upheavals.
