The current grounds of the Ferienpark Scharmützelsee look back on an eventful history. As early as 1969, there was a tent and campsite here, before the construction of the Youth Recreation Centre (JEZ) began in 1973 – planned for up to 1,280 young people.
The partial opening in 1977 took place with 320 beds in solid bungalows, in 1978 another 50 wooden bungalows were added. With its own harbour, seven gastronomic facilities and the popular Schilfhaus, the JEZ became the largest youth tourism facility in the GDR.
