The Rock Church of the Holy Cross, whose earliest phase was carved out of tuff stone in the 10th century, contains frescoes from the 14th/15th century of great color intensity. Motifs include, for example, scenes from the legend of the Way of the Cross, according to which Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, searched for the True Cross of Jesus in Jerusalem.
