The Context (1799): In the context of the Jacobin revolutions, Acquaviva erected the Tree of Liberty in the main square as a symbol of the newborn Republic, in opposition to the Bourbon monarchy.
The Tragedy of March 31, 1799: The Sanfedist (counter-revolutionary) revolt led by Cardinal Ruffo overwhelmed the city. The republican mayor, Francesco Paolo Supriani, was killed and, according to chronicles, his body was burned right under the Tree of Liberty, a symbol of that brief republican experience.
Historical Significance: The tree represented the French revolutionary values of liberty, equality, and fraternity, becoming a target of monarchical reaction.
