The Ellinghoster Halde was a former landfill and was filled up to a total of 240,000m³ with building rubble, household and industrial waste, excavated earth, etc. up to a height of 10m until 1974.

In the meantime, valuable animal and plant species have settled on this former landfill area. Out of consideration for nature, there is only a cycling path on the edge. The approx. 23 hectare biotope is of regional importance and secured as a nature reserve.

According to the city of Gladbeck, a former construction and industrial landfill site is today a valuable biotope. Do Not Enter. Whether wg. Toxins or nature conservation is an open question.

The former landfill offers an incredible variety of plants and is now a nature reserve. It is rather inconspicuous, because there are no signs or hiking information. Visitors will only find hiking and cycling trails on the northern and western bases. It is possible to circumnavigate the Ellinghorst and Rheinbaben heaps via roads and legally accessible hiking trails.
