The parish of S. Mamede do Sadão was extinguished in 1855, to, together with the Parish of Azinheira dos Barros, form a new parish designated Azinheira dos Barros and São Mamede do Sádão.
The past of this area is linked to the colonization by black slaves from the 16th century onwards, as the white populations could not resist the seasonal fevers (Malaria) that were endemic here until a few generations ago.
