The Mines of Spain Recreation Area, located just south of Dubuque, Iowa, is a 1,437-acre state park known for its dramatic limestone bluffs and deep historical roots. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the park was the site of early lead mining by Julien Dubuque and the Meskwaki people. Today, it offers over 20 miles of hiking trails that wind through prairies, forests, and wetlands. One of its most famous features is the Horseshoe Bluff, which provides a stunning panoramic view of the Mississippi River valley, while the Julien Dubuque Monument serves as a landmark honoring the city’s founder.
