The Monastery of Gerokomeiou (Iera Ivioni Panagias Girokomitissa) in Patras is one of the most important and oldest religious sites in the Achaia region.
The monastery looks back on a history of over a thousand years. The name "Gerokomeiou" (which means "nursing home" in Greek) stems from the tradition that a home for the elderly already existed at this location in the 4th century.
During the Greek War of Independence, the monastery played a central role. It was burned down by the Turko-Albanians in 1770 and again in 1821 on Palm Sunday.
