The Elbe-Seitenkanal (ESK) is, with a total length of 115 kilometers, one of Germany's most distinctive artificial waterways. For cyclists, it is an absolute institution, as it connects the Wendland, the Lüneburg Heath and the Gifhorn/Wolfsburg region like a blue ribbon. The canal connects the Elbe near Artlenburg (near Lüneburg) with the Mittellandkanal near Edesbüttel (near Wolfsburg). Technically, the paths along the ESK are service roads of the waterway administration, but almost continuously open to cyclists.
