The name Söderport probably dates back to the Middle Ages and can be found on the oldest surviving maps. At many of the gate towers in the wall there are remains of an old, demolished gate, but not of Söderport, which suggests that there was no gate here before and that Söderport was built at a later date. The pedestrian gates were resumed in 1947.
