Grauerort Fortress is a Prussian high-walled fort situated on a small promontory directly on the Elbe River's shipping channel. It was built between 1869 and 1879 north of the fortress town of Stade to protect the port of Hamburg, approximately 50 km away, from enemy ships from the North Sea. To this end, the fort was equipped with two 68-meter-long flanks along the Elbe, providing space for a total of 10 modern cannons.

Decommissioned in 1895, the fort survived both World Wars relatively unscathed. Today, Grauerort Fortress offers visitors a wealth of attractions. Located directly on the Elbe Cycle Path, its cafeteria entices visitors with homemade cakes and coffee. In the museum area and during the fascinating guided tours, secrets of the fortress's history and unique architecture are revealed. And a ride on the historic Groveblitz narrow-gauge railway within the fortress grounds is a highlight for visitors of all ages.

Interesting when you're in the area, I wasn't exactly blown away. I wouldn't go here again now. At least during the week it looks pretty bleak, even shabby. It's a shame, I was looking forward to the fortress during the tour.
