A right-bank tributary of the Sado River, its drainage basin covers an area of 734 km2 and consists of two main branches: the Alcáçovas stream proper, locally known as the Grande stream, on which the Pego do Altar dam was built, and the S. Cristóvão stream, locally known as the Prata stream.
