The "Eiserner Rhein" (Iron Rhine) is a railway line running via Mönchengladbach and Roermond between the ports of Duisburg and Antwerp. Until the cross-border freight traffic was discontinued on the section between Dalheim and Roermond in 1992, it was the shortest rail connection from the Ruhr area to the Belgian seaports and is about 50 kilometers shorter than the connection via the Montzenroute over Aachen West and Tongeren.
