The Evangelical church in Banská Štiavnica was built between 1794–1796 for the local Lutheran community, which constituted a significant part of the city's inhabitants during the period of mining development. The temple was erected during the validity of Emperor Joseph II's Edict of Toleration, which allowed Protestants to build their own churches.
The building was maintained in a simple neoclassical style. According to the regulations at the time, it initially could not have a tower or an entrance from the main street. Only later was the temple expanded with a characteristic tower, visible today above the city center.
