As a military and trading post, James Island housed officials of the Royal African Company and their staff, 33 soldiers, 8 merchants, 13 clerks, 20 craftsmen, and 32 castle slaves during the first half of the 18th century.
More than one hundred people lived here at that time. For most of the fort's history, the ordinary soldiers were quartered in barracks outside the main building, while the governor and high-ranking military officers occupied the apartments inside.
