The market existed long before the railway was built. It served as a local trading place for fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables. When the tracks were laid right through the middle of the existing market, the traders refused to leave their traditional spots. Instead, they adapted. The market is open seven days a week from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A train passes through the market eight times a day, leading to the famous spectacle of traders pulling back their wares and folding up their parasols (the "umbrellas").
