The modern palace was built for King Mutara III Rudahigwa, who resided there until his death in 1959. Mutara III Rudahigwa succeeded his father, who had been deported to the Congo by the Belgians. The palace was financed by the Belgians. Mutara III Rudahigwa therefore wanted to build his own palace, located two kilometers away on a hill. This move never took place. The third palace now houses the Kwigira Museum.
