At the southern edge of Glasgow’s Campsie Hills, hiking up Cort Ma Law gives unbeatable views south across the city’s northern outskirts with patchwork fields in the foreground. Gentle, rolling summits mean you can explore for hours up here, roaming about with nothing but overly friendly peat bogs to challenge you.

You can begin from numerous spots but the car park to the north west of Lennoxtown, in Campsie Glen, is popular for its waterfalls. From here, you’ll be hiking along the top of the impressive escarpment that rises sheer from Lennoxtown and is dotted with remnants of forts.

Cairns line the escarpment top and upon reaching Cort Ma Law’s trig pillar, a clear day will bring the best views right to you. Southwards, the land is almost entirely flat, down to Scotland’s second city. North, the Campsie Hills undulate gently and you might spy the tops of the windmills in the Gargunnock Hills.

Hike up Cort Ma Law year round but take care in winter conditions. For red squirrels, hike north to the Carron Valley Forest.

    Mountain biking

The path to Cort Ma Law is very boggy most of the year. Best tackled after a long dry spell or hard frost.
