The colorful houses of Willemstad are undoubtedly Curaçao's most iconic landmark. Most of these historic buildings are located in the Scharloo and Pietermaai districts, south of the Schottegat, and offer a picturesque testament to the vibrant architecture of the colonial era.
The reason for this colorful display, incidentally, was an eye ailment suffered by a governor of the West Indies Company in 1817, whose eyes were hurt by the stark white facades.
