The old tank bridge presumably served the tanks of the NVA and the Soviet Army as a crossing over the railway tracks since the 1970s. It was integrated into a supra-regional tank route of the Warsaw Pact armies.
The Red Army also used the bridge to get onto the former area of the prisoner of war camp with the tanks. The area served as a tank training ground since the 1950s.
