As early as the Middle Ages, Jews, originally important long-distance traders, were allowed to settle among the predominantly rural population. They brought the cattle trade in Oberkotzau to its peak. In 1444, Emperor Friedrich III "confirmed" the market rights - possibly granted much earlier - to "the owners of the town and fortress of Kotzau". After the Kotzau noble family died out and the fiefdom reverted to the state rulers, Margrave Christian Ernst of Brandenburg-Kulmbach-Bayreuth renewed these rights to the market town of Oberkotzau with a document dated June 30, 1665 and granted it a coat of arms that, unchanged to this day, shows the colors of the Hohenzollerns (= Burgraves of Nuremberg, Margraves of Bayreuth) in black and white (silver) in the square and half of the Brandenburg Red Eagle. Oberkotzau has erected a monument to its cattle traders with a fountain on the market square.

Very beautiful fountain in honor of the cattle traders and the market law from 1444. Inscription on the fountain: The cattle trade was important for the development of the place and gave the citizens the nickname "Kotzauer Seischwänz".

This fountain was placed as a monument to the medieval cattle dealers of Oberkotzau.
