A pothole is a deep, circular or cylindrical hole or cavity, sometimes very large (even several meters in diameter and depth).
These potholes are formed through natural erosion by water (especially in areas once covered by glaciers or where strong currents flowed). Water, especially from glacial meltwater or strong streams, creates swirling vortices. Within these vortices, rocks and debris carried by the water act as abrasives, eroding and smoothing the rock at depth. Over millennia, this phenomenon creates round, smooth pits in the hardest rocks.
