The airport's origins date back to the First World War, when the nearby factory of the Società Italiana Ernesto Breda per Costruzioni Meccaniche expanded its production to include military aircraft, thus creating the need for a nearby test runway.
During both wars, the airport served as the main air defense center for the Milan area.
