Between the Flörsheim district of Falkenberg and the Flörsheim lookout tower lies the "Flörsheim Switzerland." Compared to the otherwise flat southern foothills of the Taunus Mountains, this scenically stunning area boasts relatively significant differences in elevation. The Wickerbach stream is the defining feature of this "Switzerland." The floodplain, home to numerous rare animal and plant species, has been a nature reserve since 1998.

There are 191 "Switzerlands" worldwide. At least. Sixty-seven of them are located in Germany alone. This is according to the Swiss National Tourist Office; the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" even claims to have counted 233. This honorary title is bestowed upon regions that are somewhat wilder than their surroundings, evoking a romanticized vision of the real thing. Often, just a few prominent hills with steep slopes and a view are enough to earn this moniker. The Flörsheim Switzerland is certainly one of the flattest of these "Switzerlands." Just think of the Nassau Switzerland region a little further along in the Taunus mountains near Eppstein. And even the Holstein Switzerland region in Schleswig reaches the 160-meter mark.
