Santee State Park

The park provides two boat ramps for easy access to the lake.

Santee State Park is located off SC 6, three miles northwest of the town of Santee and I-95. Due to its somewhat rural location, a personal vehicle is generally necessary for convenient access to the park and its various amenities. Public transportation options directly to the park are very limited or non-existent.

Visitors can utilize various amenities including picnic shelters, playgrounds, a park store, and a community meeting building known as the Village Round. The park also offers modern conveniences such as electric vehicle charging stations and Wi-Fi access in certain areas, enhancing the visitor experience.

While the park can be popular, especially during spring and fall, its 2,500 acres and extensive lake access offer opportunities to find quieter spots. Exploring the less-trafficked hiking trails during off-peak hours (early mornings or late afternoons) or venturing out onto Lake Marion by boat or kayak can provide a more serene experience away from busier areas like campgrounds or boat ramps.

Lake Marion is a man-made lake, created as part of the Santee Cooper hydroelectric project in the early 1940s. The area also holds historical significance from the Revolutionary War, with skirmishes involving Patriot Brigadier General Francis Marion, the 'Swamp Fox,' for whom the lake is named. Santee State Park itself was established in 1942 when Orangeburg County donated the land.
