A relic from the time of iron ore mining (limonite) are funnel-shaped depressions in the ground with a scree slope at the edge, known as pingen, which were created by the near-surface exploitation of the ore deposits. The limonite adheres in small pieces to the quartzite rock found here. It can also be found in trough-like depressions that have formed on the surfaces of greywacke and clay slate. However, the deposits in the Welschneudorf district were not very productive, so the excavations were soon discontinued.
