Following Forest Road 442 offers a remote and shaded stretch through Carson National Forest, lined with evergreens and quiet clearings. The road alternates between dirt and gravel, with occasional steep or rocky grades that make trekking poles helpful. Water is scarce along the way, with reliable access only near the Rio Grande del Rancho at the northern end.
