Embark on a challenging high-altitude adventure with the Lake Peak, Penitente Peak and Santa Fe Baldy Loop. This difficult hiking route spans 17.1 miles (27.5 km) and demands a significant 4589 feet (1399 metres) of elevation gain, typically requiring around 11 hours and 14 minutes to complete. You will traverse through dense forests, including vibrant aspen groves, before emerging above the treeline onto exposed, rocky ridges and expansive alpine meadows, offering sweeping views of the Pecos Wilderness.
Before you set out, be prepared for highly dynamic weather conditions; even in summer, you might encounter frost, strong winds, or even snow at these elevations. This route is not recommended if you are not already acclimated to high altitudes, and some sections, particularly after leaving the main Winsor Trail, may require careful navigation. Parking is generally available at the Santa Fe Ski Basin trailhead, which serves as a convenient starting point for this demanding loop.
This loop offers a unique opportunity to experience the rugged beauty of the Pecos Wilderness, passing by stunning features like Lake Katherine, nestled within a glacial cirque. From the higher elevations, you can enjoy panoramic vistas that stretch across the wilderness, with distant peaks such as Truchas Peak visible on clear days. The diverse terrain, from forested paths to open alpine environments, makes this a memorable journey for experienced hikers seeking a true mountain challenge.
