Chōzen-ji Temple is the highest-ranked of the Kōfu Gozan (Five Great Zen Temples of Kōfu), a group of temples designated by the powerful warlord Takeda Shingen in the 16th century for the province's spiritual protection. It served as the family temple of Shingen's mother, Lady Ooi, whose grave and a portrait (an Important Cultural Property) are located on the grounds. Shingen also received his Zen and political education here from the founding priest. It is worth visiting for its deep historical connection to Takeda Shingen and the cultural significance as the premier temple of the Kōfu Gozan system. Visitors can also see the rare sight of both a three-storied and a five-storied pagoda on the premises and enjoy the quiet serenity of its traditional Japanese garden.
