The Karower Teiche are an approximately 129-hectare nature reserve in the north-east of Berlin. It consists of the following ponds: duck pond, reed pond, willow pond and island pond.

In all waters you can observe wonderful breeding and resting water and reed birds. Information boards will help you identify each species.

Area is good for cycling. It is best to use the Panke cycle path. For some trails I recommend a mountain bike or at least a bike with good suspension. There are quite a lot of people walking!

The NSG is an important resting and breeding area for waterfowl and reed breeders, but species of hedges and forest edges such as oriole, barred warbler, whinchat and stonechat are also native here.

There are several observation points with unfortunately overloaded explanatory panels. Binoculars are useful for viewing many waterfowl in their natural habitat.

Beautiful nature experiences are possible there. There are several viewing platforms. Sometimes buffalo and Heck cattle can also be seen.

Very nice facility, great paths, fine gravel for racing bikes borderline.
                      Lots of walkers on weekends.

After the Berliner Rieselgute was founded in Blankenfelde in 1890 and in Buch 1898, Berliner Rieselfelder were created in the neighborhood and in the area itself. The Karow ponds were used for secondary clarification or direct discharge of wastewater. Because of the high levels of pollutants, fish farming had to be given up in the 1920s and the inflow from the Lietzengraben was closed in 1980. The now exclusive supply from precipitation and underground seepage water led to a lowering of the water level. The situation was made worse by the cessation of sewage farming in 1985, and some ponds even dried up at times. To preserve the wet biotopes, the Lietzengraben was dammed in 1986 so that a partial stream flows through the ponds

The Karow ponds are located at the transition from Barnim to the Berlin glacial valley. After the last glacial period, the Panke and Lietzengraben, which come from the clayey-sandy plateau, dug meltwater channels through the sander, which is up to ten meters deep here. These gullies later silted up and fens formed. In the 19th century, the two streams were straightened and peat mining began. This created the island pond in the northwest and the willow pond in the southwest, the duck pond in the northeast and the reed pond in the southeast were dug for fish farming in 1911
