The protected dune area of Tavira is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a vast coastal area with lagoons, sandbars, and islands. The dunes of Ilha de Tavira form a natural barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and the lagoon, protecting the interior from wind and erosion.
