The Lakefront Boats and Bites – Public Beach on Deep Lake loop from Millersylvania State Park offers a delightful escape into a tranquil old-growth forest. You'll wander along smooth dirt paths and boardwalks, surrounded by towering cedar and fir trees, with frequent glimpses of the clear waters of Deep Lake. The trail leads to a public beach, an ideal spot for a break, and the dense, moss-covered woods provide a serene backdrop for spotting local wildlife like beavers, muskrats, and various bird species.
This easy hiking route is a quick 2.1 miles (3.3 km) with a negligible 26 feet (8 metres) of elevation gain, making it perfect for all fitness levels and taking only about 50 minutes to complete. Parking is available at Millersylvania State Park, but it's wise to check for any state park pass requirements or fees before you go. The trail is generally accessible year-round, though spring snowmelt can make some sections damp, so wear appropriate footwear.
Deep Lake is the heart of this park, known for its calm conditions due to a strict 5 MPH no-wake speed limit, making it excellent for paddling. Beyond the natural beauty, you can find the seasonal Lakefront Boats and Bites concession stand near the public beach, offering snacks and non-motorized boat rentals. The park also boasts historic Civilian Conservation Corps structures from the 1930s, adding a layer of history to your outdoor adventure.
