The mining village of Arenas arose in the late 19th century around the mine of the same name, nestled in a dense forest of holm oaks. Mining continued until 1981, with a period of significant development in the 1930s, when the Lheraud Shaft was constructed and the railway to transport the ore to Malacalzetta was rebuilt.
The village buildings were constructed next to the mine sites: homes for miners and technicians, administrative offices, the director's house, and a small Alpine-style church dedicated to Saint Barbara, still one of the symbols of the place today.
