The Cungiaus excavations are the largest open-pit quarry in Sardinia, covering over ten hectares. Between 1867 and the early decades of the twentieth century, calamine, the mineral from which zinc is derived, was mined here. Today, the large crater, excavated over a million cubic meters, is surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and pine trees. A path leads to a panoramic terrace offering a picturesque view of the mining landscape and the Dolomite rocks of Sulcis.
