In the 12th century, Dutch settlers settled on the Elbe and began to dam the Elbe. They founded the village of Schönhausen on its current site. The village church of St. Mary and Willebrord dates from this period. Prince Otto von Bismarck, who later became Chancellor of the German Empire, was baptized here.
