    The 0.8 kilometer short Bog Trail consists exclusively of boardwalks and is a very family-friendly hiking tour that is accessible for prams and wheelchairs. The bog itself is a unique ecosystem in the Pacific Rim National Park, as only a few species of plants can survive in the acidic soil found here.One of the best known types of vegetation that thrives in this bog is sphagnum moss, which covers most of the surface covered and can be one to two meters thick - and up to 400 years old. The only tree species that can survive the lack of nutrients and minerals in this unique area of Vancouver Island is the Shore Pine. Shore pine trees can be found here, which grow in different, interesting and irregular forms.
