Construction of the square around Sé Church began in 1552. The original Primatial See or seat of Brazil's Primate
Archbishop, after which the square is named, was demolished in 1933, although still known as Se Square.
Since then it was converted into a tramway station, and, later, into a bus terminal. During the first decade of the 21" century it was remodeled once again, and is now a public open space in the heart of Salvador's Historic District. During carnival, it is the starting point of the Afro blocks, meeting point for the festivities of Nossa Senhora da Conceição on the beach and Lavagem do Bonfim.
