This beautiful trail runs 21 miles, stretching from the salt marshes of the Neuse River to the sandy pine woods near Oyster Point through pine savannas, cypress swamps, and thick pocosin wetlands, with stretches of boardwalk to help you cross wet ground. Along the way, you’ll see pitcher plants and sundews in sunny bogs, hear woodpeckers tapping in the pines, and may even spot deer or barred owls in the quieter sections. The trail also skirts the Neuse River’s salt marshes, where you might catch views of osprey fishing or fiddler crabs scuttling along the shore. Boardwalks and blazes help with navigation, but wet conditions and biting insects make this a trail best tackled with preparation. Be sure to bring plenty of bug spray!
