Extensive fortifications are still excellently preserved around the entire old town of Elvas, perched on a hill. A walk through the ramparts in the western section is a particularly good way to learn about and experience how these fortifications were constructed. The direct access to the aqueduct, which extends down to the plain, is also fascinating.
