One of Sicily's most important cultural destinations lies at the foot of the provincial capital of Agrigento, flanked by skyscrapers: the Valley of the Temples. The valley turns out to be a ridge below the upper town. Upon it once rose the sacred precinct of the proud Greek settlement of Akragas, which in the 5th century BC could hardly be rivaled in wealth. At that time, sanctuaries lined up in harmonious distance, each one more magnificent than the next, as the ruins of the buildings burned by the Carthaginians in 406 still reveal today.
