Ivan Filippovich Usagin was one of the first inventors of the electric current transformer; his name is associated with the construction of the world's first industrial transformer, presented in 1882 at the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition in Moscow.

When the future scientist was ten years old, his mother married Yakov Afanasyevich Usagin, who lived in the village of Petrovskoye. Ivan was adopted by him (he took his stepfather's surname), after which he lived and studied in Petrovskoye at the parish school.

He grew up here, carried out public work and is buried here.

By the decree of the executive committee of the Moscow Regional Council of August 24, 1955, the monument was erected for the centenary of the scientist's birth.
