The city is located on the North Sea coast between Bergen and Stavanger. It is an important commercial center with shopping opportunities and a catchment area of approximately 200,000 people. Haugesund describes itself as a "young city in an old shell." The name is composed of Haug (German: "hill") and Sund (German: "strait").
Haugesund originated as a transshipment point and post office for sailors and fishermen during the booming herring fishery at the end of the 19th century. The city was granted city charter in 1854.
