The Jewish Quarter is considered, far beyond Vorarlberg, to be one of the few ensembles of Jewish history that has been so completely preserved. Accordingly, in 1996, the Federal Monuments Office placed the most significant parts of the Jewish Quarter under protection. Together with the former Christengasse (now Marktstraße), the former Jewish Quarter forms the urban core of Hohenems. The historic buildings of the city center are a cultural and historical testament to the centuries-long coexistence of two traditional communities – Christian and Jewish – in this town.
