The Delvenau, now erroneously also called Stecknitz; although the Stecknitz flows into the Trave, maps often show Stecknitz (Delvenau) as a river approximately 50 km long in the Duchy of Lauenburg district in Schleswig-Holstein. It rises near Grambek and flows into the Elbe near Lauenburg/Elbe. From the Niebuhr Lock to just before Lauenburg, the watercourse forms the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The name Delvenau derives from the Middle Low German word delf, meaning "ditch," and was later reinterpreted.

The "Stecknitz-Delvenau-Niederung" nature reserve, covering 617 hectares, was designated in 2002 by the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Nature and the Environment. It runs primarily along the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, along the "Green Belt," the former death strip of the inner-German border. The "Green Belt" is part of the "Stecknitz-Delvenau" nature reserve of the same name on the Mecklenburg side, which has been protected since 1990, covering an area of 249 hectares.
