Ludwigs Festspielhaus is a music theater on the shores of Lake Forggensee in Füssen. From the terrace of the theater you can see Neuschwanstein Castle, the scene of two productions of this theater.
The house was designed as "Musical Theater Neuschwanstein" by Josephine Barbarino and built between 1998 and 2000. On April 7, 2000, the world premiere of the musical Ludwig II - Yearning for Paradise by Franz Hummel (music), Stephan Barbarino (lyrics and direction) and Heinz Hauser (set design) opened the theater.
The idea for a musical about Ludwig II, King of Bavaria in its own theater on the original location had followed Barbarino since the mid-nineties, from 1994/95 together with the Mannheim Intendant Ulrich Schwab under the name Dreamking and from 1996 to the end of Premiere year 2000 together with cultural manager Felix Maria Roehl. With his function as chairman of the Ludwig Musical AG & Co. KG, the project for Ludwig II. - Yearning for Paradise was realized in the purpose-built "Musical Theater Neuschwanstein". Barbarino continued to hold the directorship and overall artistic direction until the musical about King Ludwig had to be discontinued on December 31, 2003, for obscure economic reasons, although by then 1.5 million people had attended the 1,506 performances, an average of around 75 % corresponds.
