Second largest nature reserve in Hessen
Only a few kilometers south of Frankfurt Airport, in the immediate vicinity of the Mönchbruch hunting lodge and the Mönchbruchmühle, is the unique local recreation area "Mönchbruch von Mörfelden und Rüsselsheim". With an area of 937 hectares, it is the second largest nature reserve in Hesse, surpassed only by the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve. It is the habitat for a multitude of rare animals and plants. Old oaks, alder beech forests, pedunculate oaks, swamp forests, meadows and moats characterize the landscape. The area was originally shaped by the Main. The sand, loam and gravel brought with them formed the basis for ecological biodiversity.Space for endangered species
A report from 1994 shows more than 540 different plant species, including around 60 endangered species that are on the Red List.Source: gg-online.de/html/moenchbruch_nsg.htm
