Still waters (pools, ponds, lakes) are so-called standing bodies of water in which, as the name suggests, the water is stagnant or flows at a low velocity.

Waters are indispensable in our landscape because they contain a great diversity of species. The size of the water bodies is irrelevant. Different species have adapted to a wide variety of water types and sizes, regardless of whether they are still or flowing (streams and rivers).
There are specialists such as the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata), which depends on temporary accumulations of water, such as in road ruts. The common toad (Bufo bufo), on the other hand, is a so-called generalist and rather undemanding in its habitat and inhabits all types of still waters. Generalists can adapt better to habitat changes than specialists, which is why the latter are more often among the endangered species.
