Sungdeokjeon Shrine was established in 1429 for the veneration of Bak Hyeokgeose (r. 57 BCE-4 CE), the founder of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE), on the order of King Sejong (r. 1418-1450) of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). The shrine burnt down during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 and was rebuilt in 1600. It was renovated in 1704 and repaired in 1735. In the vicinity is the Five Royal Tombs, where Bak Hyeokgeose's tomb is located. Nearby is also a stele that records the history of King Hyeokgeose and Sungdeokjeon Shrine, as well as Aryeongjeong Well, which is where King Hyeokseose's wife is said to have been born.
